Dedicated to the memory of Lex

This is a tribute to Lex, who was born in Galashiels in the Borders of Scotland on December 13, 1949. A true Gentleman and horesman. Beloved Husband, Stepfather, Grandfather and Brother. He was best known for his four in hand driving, which he proudly represented his country on numerous occasions.

He was always there with a helping hand, advice and a wicked sense of humour.

He is much loved and will always be remembered by his family and friends.

Thoughts

It is not in my nature to regret, but I regret I did not know Lex for longer. He lived on my doorstep and yet we didn't meet till three years ago. Our friendship was immediate. I recognised in him a gypsy soulmate, a man inherently generous who seemed up for anything. Wonderful to be with, with his childlike naughtiness masking a shy wisdom. I owe him a lot, both in my carriage driving, and in the warmth of my memories of sitting with him and Jane drinking and smoking in their welcoming kitchen. Why is it the best go first?

I certainly know that I wouldn't be where I am today with the horses if it wasn't for the support I had from Lex and Jane along the way. Not only with the horses but I have lost count how many times I lived at Postcombe, each time I was welcomed back with open arms over the years. I learnt so much riding for Lex and travelling to Ireland for the sales, memories I will keep with me forever. One memory that I am reminded of regularly is from when I lived at postcombe. After being worried that we had been broken into, Lex was the one who finally figured out that we hadn't actually been burgled, I had in fact been sleepwalking and trashing the joint. :) I managed to smash my way out of the flat, through the front door, removing it from its hinges. Something he always reminded me of when I saw him. So many memories of Lex, I know he will be missed by family and friends alike. Thinking of you all at this time. Helen xx

I first met lex around black beauty around 1993. I remember being a bit scared of him, because he was a man of silence. As time went on I realised that you need to earn his respect. My god when you do, he becomes so happy to see you and help you, and wish you well in life. Very few people have this very rare quality. I hadn’t seen lex for four years, but got to work with him the end of last year. We had such a crack! I consider my self very lucky to have met up with him again. Rest in peace my dear friend.
